Indian Coast Guard Day- 1 February

Every year, India commemorates the Raising Day of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on February 1. ICG is marking its 46th Raising Day this year.ICG was originally formed in the year 1977 on February 1 under the Indian Parliament’s Coast Guard Act, 1978. The Coast Guard, which is a part of the Ministry of Defence, was officially formed on August 18, 1978. Since its creation, the ICG has saved over 10,000 lives and fought about 40,000 offenders, living up to its slogan “Vayam Rakshamah,” which means “We Protect.”

World Wetlands Day- 2 February

World Wetland Day is an environment related celebration which dates back to the year 1971 when several environmentalists gathered to reaffirm the protection and love for wetlands, which are the small environments of plant life and organisms found within water bodies that bring about ecological health in abundance to not only water bodies but environments as a whole. In accordance to the beginning of World Wetlands Day, the Ramsar convention first attributed this recognition in “the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea”. World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the second day of February every year. his day serves to recognize the influence and positive production that Wetlands have had on the world and in terms brings communities together for the benefit of Mother Nature. This day, also raises global awareness because wetlands play a significant role not only in people but also in the planet.

World Cancer Day- 4 February

World Cancer Day is an international day marked on 4th February every year. It is marked to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment. It is led by the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, 2008. World Cancer Day was established on 4 February 2000 at the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer for the New Millenium, which was held in Paris. The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and deaths caused by cancer and is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer. The day is observed by the United Nations.

Kala Ghoda Festival- 5 February to 13 February

The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival is an annual festival, nine days long, commencing always on the first Saturday of February and closing is always on the second Sunday in February, in the Kala Ghoda area of South Mumbai, India. This festival was first started in 1999. The festival sections are visual arts, dance, music, theatre, cinema, literature including children’s literature as a subsection, workshops, heritage walks, urban design and architecture (2014), food, a dedicated section for children, and a vibrant street section including stalls selling eco friendly, hand made arts and crafts wares.

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation- 6 February

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is a United Nations-sponsored annual awareness day that takes place on February 6 as part of the UN’s efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation. It was first introduced in 2003. This is a movement for the rights of women and their bodies, as well as the protection of their physical health- which can be tremendously affected later in life.

Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday- 13 February

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He was an American lawyer and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War and succeeded in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government and modernizing the American economy. He was born into poverty in a log cabin in Kentucky and was raised on the frontier primarily in Indiana. He was self-educated and became a lawyer. In 1849, he returned to his law practice but became vexed by the opening of additional lands to slavery as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. He reentered politics in 1854, becoming a leader in the new Republican party, and he reached a national audience in the 1858 debates against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln ran for President in 1860, sweeping the North in victory. Lincoln is remembered as a martyr and hero of the United States and is often ranked as the greatest president in American history.

Sarojini Naidu Birth Anniversary- 13 February

Sarojini Naidu was an Indian political activist and poet. A proponent of civil rights, women’s emancipation and anti-imperialistic ideas, she was an important figure in India’s struggle for Independence from colonial rule. Naidu’s work as a poet earned her the sobriquet ‘the Nightingale of India’, or ‘Bharat Kokila’ by Mahatma Gandhi because of the colour, imagery and lyrical quality of her poetry. Sarojini Chattopadhyay was born in Hyderabad on 13 February 1879. Following India’s independence from British rule in 1947, Naidu was appointed as the governor of the United Province (present-day Uttar Pradesh), making her India’s first woman governor. She remained in office until her death in March 1949 (aged 70)

Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Christian feast day honouring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

Taj Mahotsav- 18 February to 27 February

Taj Mahotsav (Taj Festival) is an annual 10-day (from 18 to 27 February) event at Shilpgram in Agra, India. This festival invokes the memories of the old Mughal era and nawabi style prevalent in Uttar Pradesh in the 18th and 19th centuries. About 400 artisans from different parts of India get an opportunity to display their works of art. These include wood/stone carvings from Tamil Nadu, bamboo/cane work from North East India, paper mash work from South India and Kashmir, marble and zardozi work from Agra, wood carving from Saharanpur, brass wares from Moradabad, hand made carpets from Bhadohi, pottery from Khurja, Chikan work from Lucknow, silk and zari work from Banaras, shawls and carpets from Kashmir/Gujarat, hand printing from Farukkhabad and Kantha stitch from West Bengal. Various film production & media house of Bollywood also participate and manage artists in Mahotsav.

National Science Day- 28 February

National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28 February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist, Sir C V Raman on 28th February 1928. For his discovery, Sir C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
